Healthcare reform requires that an insurance company accept everyone who applies, regardless of medical condition. Some people could potentially abuse the insurance system and cost the insurance companies millions of dollars.

Let’s say someone goes five years without health insurance. Suddenly in March, that person gets Cancer. He or she can apply to the insurance company and pay premiums of $500/month for 3 months. During that time the insurance company can pay for chemo, radiation and surgery and incur a bill of $200,000. Once the person recovers, he or she can drop the insurance.

Net result: The insurance company collected $1500 in premiums for and paid out $200,000 in claims.
