Travel Coverage

While individual health plans for those under 65 provide world-wide coverage, Medicare does not pay for medical services outside the United States.  However, your Medicare supplement plan provides a $50,000 lifetime benefit for emergency and urgent care when you are abroad.  The question is: should you get extra travel coverage?

  • If you are traveling to westernized countries, this benefit may be adequate. That choice is up to you.
  • If you are traveling to a country that might require very expensive air-transport to get to a hospital, then you should get travel coverage.

After researching the different travel coverage options, we recommend GeoBlue Travel Medical and International Insurance. GeoBlue is a product of Blue Cross/Blue Shield.
